Gavaskar's Insights on IPL Suspension
In Mumbai, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed that the recent halt in the Indian Premier League (IPL) could provide teams like Delhi Capitals (DC), Mumbai Indians (MI), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) an opportunity to reflect on their strategies and enhance their standings in the league. This commentary was made during the Star Sports Press Room ahead of the IPL 2025's resumption, which features a match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Bengaluru on Saturday. The tournament faced a suspension on March 9 due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
Gavaskar, serving as a JioStar expert, noted, "It's common for a batter to lose their rhythm after spending time at the non-striker's end without facing the ball; even a brief pause can disrupt momentum. Likewise, the recent break in the tournament may hinder teams that were previously on a winning streak."
He further elaborated, "For teams like Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, or Punjab Kings, this pause could be beneficial—they can take this time to reassess and strategize for improvement. The upcoming 8-10 days will be crucial. Initially, the league resembles a marathon with 14 matches, but with only 2-3 games remaining, it transforms into a sprint towards the finish line, aiming for a top-four or ideally a top-two finish."
Currently, DC sits fifth in the standings, having secured only one win against four losses after a strong start with five consecutive victories. Meanwhile, MI, after a solid beginning with just one loss in their first five matches, experienced a six-match winning streak that was halted by the Gujarat Titans. PBKS has also encountered challenges, with one loss and a no-result in their last five games.
Additionally, former Indian batter Suresh Raina, also a JioStar expert, expressed confidence in RCB's potential to clinch their first title after 18 years, stating that the team is "operating at a different level this season."
Raina remarked, "There are strong indications that Royal Challengers Bengaluru is performing exceptionally well this year. They have successfully defended scores of 150 and 136 at Chinnaswamy, showcasing their improved bowling unit. The new captain has triumphed over Chennai Super Kings twice—once in Chennai and once at home, which is quite impressive. The atmosphere in the dressing room is optimistic, indicating a team capable of going all the way. While Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings are also performing well, this could finally be Virat's year to lift the trophy after 18 years."
Currently, RCB holds the second position in the points table with eight victories and three losses, accumulating a total of 16 points.
